Truth Equals Freedom

“And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” – John 8:32, ESV.

Independence Day — family, friends, food, music, fireworks, parades, baseball, and the list can go on and on. Everyone celebrates differently.

But what does Independence Day mean to you?

Possibly a day off work?

For this country, the day has a deeper meaning — no longer being under Britain’s monarchy. This separation meant that thirteen colonies were now united, free, and independent states. They were free to form the nation they desired; however, to create this union, the newly formed states needed a legal document stating the cause of the separation. Thus, the Declaration of Independence was written.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident….”

But then, was this nation really built on truth — the quality of being true, genuine, actual, or factual?[1]

In this day and time, some would contest the statement. So maybe we’ll discuss this at a later date.

Nevertheless, let’s move on to the revelation for today.

When you think about our choice in accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior over our lives, we receive an article of declaration. The Bible.

The Bible is the book that separates us from the bondage of this world. It is a collection of inspired scriptures, given by God, “profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16)

I’m talking about the truth of God’s word — the factual content of the revealed word that exposes the dark, hidden secrets in our lives and set’s us free.

Freedom from the life we lived before salvation is worth celebrating.

When the woman found her lost coin, she shouted, ‘Come and celebrate with me! I had lost my precious silver coin, but now I’ve found it.’ That’s the way God responds every time one lost sinner repents and turns to him. He says to all his angels, ‘Let’s have a joyous celebration, for the one who was lost, I have found!’ ” (Luke 15:9-10, TPT). In a sense, God is saying, “look, they have found the truth. Let’s celebrate!

Now, I’m not sure if I would break out the fireworks every time someone comes to Christ, but this freedom is definitely worth giving God praise. Because, when I think of the goodness of Jesus and all he’s done for me, my soul cries out hallelujah; I thank God for saving me.

What truths are you holding to this week? What freedoms are you celebrating?

Let’s not only take one day out of the year to commemorate our freedom but with the dawn of every new day we’re given, let’s rejoice in knowing that he who the Son has set free is free indeed. (John 8:36)
