Unspeakable

“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him [be] glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” (Ephesians 3:20-21, NKJV)

If you do a Google search for the definition of the word “unspeakable”, you will find that Mr. or Mrs. Google defines unspeakable as, not able to be expressed in words. Along with this definition, you will discover similar words like:

Indescribable

Beyond description

Unimaginable

Inconceivable

Unthinkable

In our scripture passage this morning, we find Paul ending, a prayer, that he has prayed over the Church at Ephesus, commending them to the One, who is able to do far more than what can be described with words. Wow! Can you imagine experiencing something so overwhelming that you can’t describe it? MercyMe tried to pen that experience, when they wrote the lyrics to the song, I Can Only Imagine. But did they truly capture, what the experience would be like when one meets Jesus? I would say not. If Paul’s words deem to be true, that encounter is going to be beyond description.

The God that we have chosen to serve is ABLE. He was able to bless a man and a woman who were well beyond the birthing years with a child. He was able to deliver three men, from a fiery furnace, who refused to bow down, to a golden image and worship. He was able to deliver one of His chosen sons, from the mouth of a lion, when he found himself in the lion’s den. This God that we serve was able to give sight to the blind, cause the lame to walk, deliver a man from the demons that possessed his soul, feed thousands, and much, much more. This God that we serve is able to keep you from falling and make every grace overflow to you. This God that we serve is the Strong and Mighty One. He is the All-Sufficient Creator. He is, EL (Genesis 35:11) But, wait. These miraculous acts are all dependent upon this one clause, “according to the power that works in you.”

God’s unimaginable ability partners with our faith and spiritual strength to perform the unspeakable. We get the above and beyond and He gets the Glory in the church, through His son, Christ Jesus to all generations, not just once for all, but forever and ever –– an eternity. AMEN!

So I leave you with the words written by MercyMe and I challenge you to reflect on all the times, where God has shown Himself mightily in your life and see if you can find the words to describe these awe-inspiring moments.

I can only imagine when that day comes
When I find myself standing in the Son
I can only imagine when all I would do is forever
Forever worship You
I can only imagine
I can only imagine

I can only imagine when that day comes
When I find myself standing in the Son
I can only imagine when all I would do is forever
Forever worship You
I can only imagine
I can only imagine

Surrounded by Your glory, what will my heart feel
Will I dance for You Jesus, or in awe of You be still
Will I stand in Your presence, or to my knees will I fall
Will I sing hallelujah, will I be able to speak at all
I can only imagine
I can only imagine
