Can You Hear Me Now?

Father, I thank you that you always hear me.

Verizon Wireless nailed it when they aired this campaign in 2001. Many people across America, who were frustrated with their cell phone service, could relate to Paul Marcarelli. Even though Marcarelli was an American actor, who played the part of the ubiquitous Test Man in these commercials, the problem he presented spoke into the lives of many.

In these advertisements, you see this Test Man popping-up in random locations with a cell phone in his hand, asking the simple question, “Can you hear me now?” Each time that he inquirers, it is evident that the person on the other end responds with a “yes” because his reply to them would be “good”. And then the tag line comes: We never stop working for you.

How comforting to know that someone would exert his or her time and energy into making sure that you are well taken care of. Just as Verizon Wireless committed to doing this for their customers, our Heavenly Father has committed to doing the same for us. He never stops working.

With God, you never have to ask, Can you hear me now? He is one who never sleeps or slumbers. He is always sitting and waiting attentively listening for the voice of His children. He finds pleasure in meeting their needs because it is the opportune time to show forth the mighty works of His hand.

There is one thing that I believe about this pandemic, and that is, God wants us to draw Him closer. So many times, we ask Him to lure us closer. We have even sung it in our songs, Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord or Draw me, draw me, Lord and I’ll come running after You. But in turn, God wants us to be the magnet. When we attract Him, it shows that we are seeking after Him.

Like Zacchaeus, sometimes we have to elevate ourselves above the crowd and the noise, to get a glimpse of Jesus. Then there are times we might find it necessary to follow the example of Nicodemus waiting until everyone has gone asleep and still away in the midnight hour, eagerly hoping to see Him. Then, when times seem to be hard and desperation sets in, like the woman with the issue of blood, we have to press our way in, stretching and reaching for the hem that releases dünames power –– the power that heals, sets free, and delivers.

There is intimacy in drawing God close to us. The closer we draw Him, the least we have to worry about whether or not He hears us. You know sometimes, our minds like to play tricks on us, causing us to think that God does not listen. But let me assure you, there is not a word that falls to the ground or goes unnoticed. The distance between our mouths and His ear is a breath. To God, the loudest cry is nothing but a whisper when we lean in close.

Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Seek after God, and He will diligently reward you. Whisper unto God, and He will always hear you.

You: Can You hear me now?

God: Yes.

You: Good.
