You’re My BFF

“… I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you.” – John 15:15b

Fun Fact: In the year 1996, the acronym, BFF, began to take its place in the world of human vocabulary. In 2010, this acronym was added to the New Oxford American Dictionary.[1]

What is the meaning behind these three letters that we have embraced?

BFF — Best Friends Forever — a term of endearment that one would use to describe their selected, closest friend.

Is there someone in your life with whom you can share the joys, as well as the raw, real emotions of your life? — someone who accepts you for who you are and doesn’t hold you to false images but permits you to be the authentic you unapologetically. If you have no such person in your life, allow me to introduce you or perhaps, reacquaint you to someone who fits this description.

(Say your first name), I’d like you to meet Jesus. Jesus, this is (say your first name).

Sometimes, we forget that there’s someone closer to us than our high school ‘bestie’ or college closest friend. So, we give those in our inner circle these titles, vowing that they will remain with us for a lifetime. And that’s correct. They will, indeed, remain with us for a lifetime. But, nowadays, wouldn’t you want something more substantial? — a confidant whose presence will remain forever?

King Solomon said, friends come, and friends go, “But there is a [true, loving] friend who [is reliable and] sticks closer than a brother.” (Proverbs 18:24, AMP)

Johnson Oatman, Jr. wrote these lyrics, “There’s not a friend like the lowly Jesus, No, not one! No, not one!”

Jesus, himself, said, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” (John 15:13) Then, He put His words to action and died on a cross for you and for me.

I would definitely say that the expression “Actions speak louder than words” holds true in the case of the cross.

To be considered a friend of Jesus, one has to abandon the servant mentality and take on the mantle of a friend.

Friendship is not according to what we can do or how much we can do. But it’s according to the image we portray in the eyesight of God.

It wasn’t what Abraham did that earned him the title, “Father of Many Nations.” It was who he was in the eyesight of God — a righteous man.

It wasn’t what Enoch did that caused him to bypass a physical death. It was his character in God’s eyesight — a man pleasing to God.

It wasn’t Mary’s social status that earned her the honor of being Jesus’s mother. It was her character and nature in the sight of God. Mary was highly favored, and the Lord was with her — a woman blessed among women. (Luke 1:28)

When we have a friend’s status on Jesus’s page, He shares the secrets and mysteries of God. Everything that He hears becomes knowledge to us. Moreover, for us, this untapped knowledge is a hidden treasure awaiting discovery.
